Islip, NY
Located in Suffolk County, NY on the South Shore of Long Island, lies the town of Islip. This area was inhabited by the Algonquin Indians. In 1683 William Nicoll purchased the land from the chief, naming the 50,000 acre plantation Islip Grange. The area was named after his home town, Islip, England.
By 1710, the town grew and the colonial government passed an act to allow Islip to elect two assessors, a collector, a constable and a supervisor. Here, the people had a voice and could vote. Residents in the area raised grain and beef. The location, close to the water, made fishing and shipping a way of life. The clam and oyster business employed about 500 boats and 1,100 men.
Wealthy tourists from New York City began building mansions, lodges and country clubs in the area for their vacationing pleasure. In 1765, William Nicoll had St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oakdale built. Here, early settlers and Native Americans who had become Christians had a place to worship.

In 1826, the federal government had created the first Fire Island lighthouse. By 1860, David Sammis's Surf Hotel, located east of the lighthouse, and attracted hundreds of people who arrived from New York City and the mainland by ferry and private boats. This brought in a lot of tourism but in the early 20th century whale boats were replaced with ferries and small manufacturing firms sprang up on the sites of old farms. The farming community turned into a bustling suburb. Today, more than 300,000 people call Islip, NY their home.
