Located in Nassau County, NY, lies the town of Hempstead. The town was first settled around 1644 when a treaty was established between the colonists and the Native Americans living here at that time. In documents dating back to the 1640s, the town was called “Heemstede”. It is believed that the area was named after the Dutch town and castle or the name was given to the area by a land owner from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England.
The American Revolution caused a split in the land into north and south Hempstead and over the years there was a shift in counties resulting in some of the town becoming part of Queens. Today, there are about 760,000 people living in the three towns that combine into Hempstead, NY.
